Vowel harmony and suffixes: how Turkish works
Turkish is written in the Latin alphabet and read as it is written, which makes the first weeks easy. Its grammar works like building blocks: you add suffixes to a root to express plural, possession, place, tense and person, so one long word can say what takes a full sentence in English. Vowel harmony then decides which form of each suffix to use.
It is regular, with very few exceptions, but it asks you to think differently. The FSI places Turkish at about 1,100 class hours for professional proficiency. Learners in Dublin usually start with travel phrases and numbers, then build up the suffixes one by one with a tutor.
Turkish lessons in Dublin City: what they cost and which exam
Turkish tutors teaching face to face are rare outside Dublin; online, native tutors from Türkiye charge €10 to €25 an hour, among the lowest rates for any language, with a discounted first lesson. That lets learners in Dublin City take two or three short sessions a week for the price of one lesson elsewhere.
The Yunus Emre Institute, Türkiye's cultural institute, runs a proficiency exam in Turkish as a foreign language, and Turkish universities use their own tests (TÖMER centres) for foreign students. For travel or family, set your own goals with your tutor: order, haggle, follow a conversation at the table.
Turkish courses by video: you choose a native or certified tutor for this language, book a first lesson at a low price, then set your own pace.

Turkish courses: three ways to make progress
One lesson a week, all year
The most common pace for adults: it keeps motivation up and gains about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.
A sprint before an exam
Three or four lessons a week for one or two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.
Conversation only, to dare to speak
No textbook: you talk about your daily life, the news and your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.
Turkish courses in Dublin: common questions
Is Turkish useful outside Türkiye?
Yes: it is close to Azerbaijani and shares structures with other Turkic languages spoken across Central Asia. It is also spoken by large communities in Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
How quickly can I get by in Turkish on holiday?
Ten to fifteen one-to-one lessons are enough to greet people, order food, ask prices and directions. Locals appreciate the effort, even with simple sentences.

💡 One tip before you book a tutor
Tell the tutor at the first lesson what you need the language for and by when: an exam, a trip, an interview, a move abroad. The following lessons are built around it, and you will quickly see whether their method suits you.
