The Devanagari script and spoken Hindi
Hindi is written in Devanagari, a script of about 46 basic letters where each sign is a sound, read from left to right with a line along the top. Most learners read it within a month. Spoken Hindi is very close to Urdu: at conversation level, speakers of the two understand each other well.
The grammar puts the verb at the end and uses postpositions instead of prepositions, and nouns have two genders. The FSI rates Hindi at about 1,100 class hours for professional proficiency. A native tutor helps with the retroflex consonants and the aspirated sounds that English does not have. Learners in Dublin often start with family conversation and film vocabulary.
Hindi lessons in Dublin City: tutors and prices
With the growth of the Indian community in Ireland, cultural associations and temples in the cities sometimes run Hindi classes, often at a low cost. Elsewhere in Dublin City, online lessons are the simplest route: native tutors from India charge €8 to €25 an hour, among the most affordable rates, with a discounted first lesson.
There is no international Hindi exam as widespread as those for European languages. Set your goals with your tutor: read the script, follow a conversation at a family meal, watch a film without subtitles. Two lessons a week bring most beginners to simple conversations within six months.
Hindi courses by video: you choose a native or certified tutor for this language, book a first lesson at a low price, then set your own pace.

Hindi courses: three ways to make progress
One lesson a week, all year
The most common pace for adults: it keeps motivation up and gains about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.
A sprint before an exam
Three or four lessons a week for one or two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.
Conversation only, to dare to speak
No textbook: you talk about your daily life, the news and your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.
Hindi courses in Dublin: common questions
Is Hindi useful in Ireland?
For many people, yes: the Indian community has grown fast, especially in health care and tech, and Hindi helps with colleagues, friends and in-laws. It is also the key to Indian cinema and to travel across northern India.
Should I learn Hindi in Devanagari or in transliteration?
Start with Devanagari: it takes a few weeks and makes pronunciation much clearer than Latin transliterations, which vary from one source to another. Your tutor can still use transliteration in chat for quick notes.
