Learning Mandarin from zero: tones, pinyin and characters
Mandarin grammar is surprisingly simple: no conjugations, no plurals, no genders. The difficulty lies elsewhere. Each syllable carries one of four tones that change its meaning, and writing uses characters rather than an alphabet. Learners start with pinyin, the Latin transcription, to get the sounds right, then add characters a few at a time.
An adult English speaker needs around 2,200 class hours for professional proficiency according to the US Foreign Service Institute, but a useful level for travel or simple business comes much sooner. Steady contact with a native tutor is what makes the tones stick: a recorded voice cannot tell you when yours is wrong, whether you study in Dublin or anywhere else in Dublin City.
Chinese lessons in Dublin: prices, HSK and where to learn
Universities in Dublin and Cork have offered Mandarin evening courses for adults through their Confucius Institutes, which also host sessions of the HSK, the official Chinese proficiency exam. HSK 4 is often asked for to study in China. A private tutor in Dublin, when you find one, charges €25 to €45 an hour.
Online, native Mandarin tutors charge €10 to €30 an hour, with lessons at times that suit Irish evenings. Ask for a tutor who uses simplified characters, the standard in mainland China, unless your goal is Taiwan or Hong Kong, where traditional characters are used.

Chinese courses: three ways to make progress
One lesson a week, all year
The most common pace for adults: it keeps motivation up and gains about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.
A sprint before an exam
Three or four lessons a week for one or two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.
Conversation only, to dare to speak
No textbook: you talk about your daily life, the news and your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.
Chinese courses in Dublin: common questions
How long does it take to speak basic Mandarin?
With two lessons a week and daily practice, most adults manage simple conversations about themselves, numbers, food and travel after six to nine months, roughly HSK 2 or 3. Reading a newspaper takes years; speaking for travel does not.
Do I have to learn Chinese characters?
Not at first. You can speak Mandarin using pinyin only, and many travellers do. To read menus, signs or messages you will need characters: around 600 for HSK 3, learned with spaced-repetition apps between lessons.
