How a private language lesson works

The first lesson is a check-up: your level, your goal, the time you have. The tutor then suggests a pace, often one or two one-hour lessons a week, and a programme that fits: conversation, grammar, exam preparation, the vocabulary of your job.

Face to face, the tutor comes to you or meets you in a quiet place. By video, you meet on a platform with materials shared on screen and no travel. Either way, what makes you progress is regularity and speaking time: in a one-to-one lesson you speak far more than in a group.

What does a language course cost in Ireland in 2026?

A private tutor who meets you face to face usually charges €25 to €50 an hour, depending on the language, their experience and your goal, with Dublin at the top of the range. A language school charges €40 to €70 an hour for one-to-one lessons, but its evening group courses cost €150 to €400 for a term of eight to twelve weeks. ETB adult education evening classes are often cheaper still.

Online, the range runs from about €10 to €35 an hour, with a discounted first lesson. English classes for newcomers run by the ETBs are often free for people on international protection and residents on a low income.

Language school, local tutor or online platform: which to choose?

A language school gives you a framework: a placement test, a programme, evening courses, exam sessions. A local tutor follows your pace and can meet you near home. An online platform offers the widest choice: native tutors for every language, very broad hours, prices often lower than in a school, and the option to change tutor.

The three combine well: many adults take an intensive course in a school, then keep their level up with a tutor by video. Start from your goal, and choose the format that serves it.

Questions about learning a language in Ireland

Do I need any level before booking a private lesson?

No. Private lessons suit complete beginners too: the tutor starts from zero, explains in English when needed and moves at your pace. It is the most comfortable way to start a language without feeling lost in a group.

Are there free or cheap language classes for adults in Ireland?

Yes. ETB adult education services run evening classes at moderate prices and free English classes for many newcomers. Libraries host conversation groups, and some cultural institutes hold open days and taster sessions.

Are the schools listed here linked to the online tutoring platform?

No. The listings come from open map data and are given for information only. The trial lesson buttons lead to an independent partner platform that has no link with these schools.
