English classes for newcomers in Graney: free and paid routes

If you have just arrived in Graney, start with your local Education and Training Board (ETB). ETBs run ESOL classes (English for Speakers of Other Languages) in towns all over County Kildare, often free of charge for people on international protection, beneficiaries of temporary protection and residents on a low income, with QQI certificates at the end of each level.

Private English language schools are the other route: they welcome international students, including non-EU students on a Stamp 2 permission, who must enrol on a full-time course of at least 25 weeks in a school on the official ILEP list. Libraries and community centres add free conversation groups, a good way to practise between lessons.

How much does an English course cost in Graney?

Prices vary with the format. A general English course in a private school costs roughly €150 to €300 a week for full-time morning classes, a little more in Dublin than in Cork, Galway or Limerick. A 25-week academic year programme for international students usually costs between €2,000 and €3,500, with the exam fee and learner protection included or not depending on the school.

One-to-one lessons with a private tutor in Graney cost around €30 to €50 an hour, more for business English or IELTS coaching. Online, native and certified tutors start at about €10 an hour and rarely go beyond €35, and the first lesson is usually discounted. ESOL classes run by the ETB are often free.

IELTS, Cambridge or QQI: which English exam to aim for in Graney

The right exam depends on what it is for. IELTS Academic is asked for by most Irish universities and by the Nursing and Midwifery Board, which also accepts OET; IELTS General Training serves for some visa routes abroad. Cambridge B2 First and C1 Advanced are certificates that never expire and are well known to employers, while the Duolingo English Test is accepted by a growing number of colleges.

QQI ESOL awards, delivered through ETB centres in County Kildare, recognise each level you complete and can lead to further education courses. Whatever the exam, a tutor who knows its format will save you weeks: timed writing tasks, speaking practice with a partner, past papers.

English as a foreign language courses: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week, all year

The most common pace for adults: it keeps motivation up and gains about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.

A sprint before an exam

Three or four lessons a week for one or two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.

Conversation only, to dare to speak

No textbook: you talk about your daily life, the news and your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.

English as a foreign language courses in Graney: common questions

Are English classes free for new arrivals in Ireland?

Often, yes. ETB adult education services run free ESOL classes for many groups: people on international protection, beneficiaries of temporary protection and residents on a low income. Waiting lists can be long in busy areas, so register early and combine the classes with conversation groups or an online tutor.

How long does it take to reach B2 in English from scratch?

Count on roughly 500 to 600 hours of guided learning in total, according to Cambridge estimates, plus practice outside class. Living in an English-speaking country speeds things up a lot: full-time students often move up one level every three to four months.

Can I prepare for IELTS with an online tutor from home?

Yes. Many online tutors specialise in IELTS and work on past papers, timed writing and mock speaking tests over video. The test itself is taken at an official test centre, on paper or on computer, so book your date once your practice scores are steady.
