Learning Swedish for a job in Ireland

Nordic language speakers are in steady demand in Irish customer service, sales and content moderation hubs, mainly in Dublin and Cork, and companies sometimes train staff who already have a good base. For an English speaker, Swedish is among the easiest languages: about 600 to 750 class hours for professional proficiency according to the FSI.

The grammar is simple, with verbs that do not change with the person. The difficulties are pronunciation, especially the pitch accent and certain sounds, and the two genders of nouns. A native tutor corrects the melody of your sentences from the start, which is what makes you understood. Learners in Killerrig working remotely for Nordic companies find a weekly lesson easy to fit in.

Swedish lessons in County Carlow: cost, Swedex and TISUS

Swedish tutors teaching face to face are rare outside Dublin, so most learners in County Carlow book online: native tutors from Sweden charge €15 to €35 an hour, with a discounted trial lesson.

Two exams certify the language. Swedex certifies levels A2, B1 and B2 and is taken at centres abroad. TISUS, the Test in Swedish for University Studies, is the C1-level exam for entry to Swedish universities. Swedish also opens the door to Norwegian and, in writing, to Danish: once you speak one, the others are largely understandable.

Swedish courses: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week, all year

The most common pace for adults: it keeps motivation up and gains about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.

A sprint before an exam

Three or four lessons a week for one or two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.

Conversation only, to dare to speak

No textbook: you talk about your daily life, the news and your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.

Swedish courses in Killerrig: common questions

Do I need Swedish to live in Sweden?

Not on day one: most Swedes speak excellent English. For work, integration and friendships, Swedish quickly matters, and many employers expect it within a year or two. Starting before you move pays off.

Can I learn Swedish and Norwegian at the same time?

It is better to start with one. Once you reach B1 in Swedish, Norwegian comes very fast, mostly a matter of spelling and accent. Learning both from zero together mixes them up.
