The Greek alphabet and the first months of lessons
The Greek alphabet has 24 letters, and many of them are already familiar from maths and science. Most learners read it within one or two weeks. Pronunciation is regular, with one stressed syllable marked by an accent. Grammar takes longer: nouns have genders and cases, and verbs change a lot with tense and aspect.
The FSI estimates about 1,100 class hours for professional proficiency, but conversational Greek for holidays comes much earlier. With two lessons a week, learners in Ballindooly usually order, chat and read signs after three to four months. A tutor helps you speak modern spoken Greek rather than the ancient Greek some remember from school.
Greek lessons in County Galway: prices and the Certificate of Attainment
Group classes in Modern Greek are rare outside Dublin, where a few cultural associations and university evening courses run them. Most learners in County Galway take lessons online with native tutors from Greece or Cyprus, at €12 to €30 an hour, with a low-cost trial lesson; a local private tutor costs €25 to €45.
The Certificate of Attainment in Greek, issued by the Centre for the Greek Language, is the official exam, from A1 to C2. It is usually held once a year, in May, at centres in Greece and abroad. B1 or above is useful for living and working in Greece.

Greek courses: three ways to make progress
One lesson a week, all year
The most common pace for adults: it keeps motivation up and gains about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.
A sprint before an exam
Three or four lessons a week for one or two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.
Conversation only, to dare to speak
No textbook: you talk about your daily life, the news and your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.
Greek courses in Ballindooly: common questions
Is Modern Greek very different from Ancient Greek?
Yes and no. The alphabet and many roots are the same, but pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary have changed a lot. Knowing Ancient Greek helps with reading; it does not prepare you for conversation, which a tutor should focus on.
Can I learn Greek in time for a summer holiday?
If you start in the spring, yes: twelve to twenty lessons cover the alphabet, greetings, numbers, restaurants and directions. Greeks are generous with visitors who try a few words.
